EIL : English as an International Language
WE : World Englishes
ELF : English as a Lingua Franca
GELTGlobal Englishes for Language Teaching

Aims and the central question
This project aims to implement English language teaching (ELT) and teacher education informed by Global Englishes and critical applied linguistics, and to examine their effects empirically. ELT in Japan has long treated so-called "native-speaker norms" as the sole standard of correctness. Research has warned that this not only undermines learners' confidence in their own English but may also foster discriminatory attitudes toward non-native varieties. While such concerns are widely shared in the literature, concrete proposals for classroom practice remain scarce.
The central question of this project is: "What does English language teaching look like when it is grounded in Global Englishes and nurtures autonomous second-language users of English?" We address this question from three angles — providing theory, implementing lessons, and verifying effects — to develop autonomous users of English with pluralistic views of language.
Theoretical background
The project builds on the three research fields that have developed alongside the global spread of English, a new paradigm that integrates them into pedagogy, and critical applied linguistics, which adds a social-justice perspective.
English as an International LanguageEIL
A field that views English not as the property of particular nations but as a shared language of international communication, and rethinks how it should be taught.
World EnglishesWE
A field that describes and respects the varieties of English that have developed around the world — such as Indian English and Singapore English — as legitimate systems in their own right.
English as a Lingua FrancaELF
A field that examines interactions among speakers of different first languages, illuminating how meaning is negotiated and what strategic competence looks like in practice.
Global Englishes for Language TeachingGELT
A forward-looking paradigm that integrates insights from EIL, WE, and ELF into language teaching and teacher education. This site takes its name from GELT.
In addition, drawing on critical applied linguistics — which seeks to transform social injustice — the project pursues a fundamental shift away from monolingualism and deep-rooted "native-speakerism" in ELT.
Three strands of the project
Building an online platform
We are building and expanding this site to provide theory and implementation for English language teaching and teacher education from elementary school through university, publishing lesson plans, worksheets, tests, listening audio, and on-demand class videos.
Localization and classroom implementation
Published theory and materials are adapted to the realities of each school, and lessons are implemented in collaboration with participating teachers.
Qualitative and quantitative verification
The effects of the lessons are examined through mixed-methods research combining questionnaires, interviews, materials analysis, and classroom recordings. Validated scales such as the EILPS are also used, building up action research and case studies.
Four analytical perspectives
Language attitudes of learners and teachers
Content and use of teaching materials
Lessons and classroom discourse
Tests and assessment
